Al-Bustan Seeds of Culture: Cross-cultural arts exchange program ($5,000)

Al-Bustan-20130418_inq_dm1bustan18-bAl-Bustan Seeds of Culture is dedicated to presenting and teaching Arab culture through the arts and language. “Al-Bustan,” Arabic for “The Garden,” offers structured exposure to the language, art, architecture, music, dance, literature, and natural environment of the Arab world. Al-Bustan promotes cross-cultural understanding among youth and adults of all ethnic, religious, and socio-economic backgrounds through artistic and educational programs. Artistas y Musicos Latino Americanos: General Operating Support ($5,000)

AMLA-Ensemble-Performance-in-ChinatownThrough its ongoing programs and special projects, AMLA promotes the development, dissemination, and understanding of Latin music in the Philadelphia area and beyond. AMLA’s programs are directed mainly to Latino youth, families, and community members, but are open to all students, families, musicians, dancers, and aficionados of Latin American music and culture. By teaching and inspiring love for and disciplined knowledge of Latin music and dance, AMLA helps build bridges between frequently divided racial and ethnic communities while strengthening communities. BalletX: Dance eXchange In-school Program ($5,000)

BalletX, a contemporary ballet company, unites world-class choreographers with an outstanding company of professional dancers to forge new works. Dancers from BalletX and the Philadelphia dance community will continue the growth of the in-school education program Dance eXchange by expanding its reach to three elementary school and over 200 third and fourth graders. Kulu Mele African Dance & Drum Ensemble: General Operating Support ($5,000)

The Company conducts outreach to youth and also self-produces performances and workshops each year that are affordable for a broad cross section of the city’s residents. LiveConnections2LiveConnections inspires learning and builds community through collaborative music-making. Since its founding in 2008, LiveConnections has re-imagined the landscape of live music and music education through unique collaborations that join artists from different genres to highlight how music crosses cultures and creates bridges of understanding. Philadelphia Photo Arts Center: After-school photography program ($7,500)

As a non-profit organization, PPAC is dedicated to fostering the production and exhibition of work at the leading edge of contemporary practice, as well as in-depth, accessible art education. PPAC’s innovative programming connects artists with audiences, engaging them as more than just passive viewers of work, but as a part of the creative process. Teen Photo is a free, year-long exploration of photography as an introduction to visual communication and critical thinking, as well as a valuable technical skill. Inspired by the social development and music education program of Venezuela called El Sistema, POP seeks to enrich the lives of Philadelphia youth by providing daily musical instruction in communities that have little access to music education.
