Bio

Byshera Williams has been an academic, editor,  and cultural critic. She majored in English Literature and minored in Africana Studies and Philosophy at Drexel University. Her senior thesis focused on the intersections of surrealist narrative and historical violence on Black female characters and how that speaks to larger social and systemic realities. She received her MA from the University of Chicago, focused on English Literature and Cinema and Media Studies. Her Master’s thesis focused on Black women in the romantic comedy and how speculative fiction can create new avenues for tenderness.

Throughout her career she has worked at arts and literature focused non-profits in Philadelphia. She is currently the Coordinator of Community Engagement at the Philadelphia Art Museum where she stewards “Seeding Joy,” a monthly workshop in collaboration with the Museum of Black Joy and Drexel Writers Room.

Arts. Community. Transformation.
