Personal Values

I believe the labyrinth is a living classroom and sanctuary, where artistry and reflection meet resilience. My values—accessibility, creativity, emotional safety, humility, and sustainability—guide every program I design. I honor diverse voices and identities, ensuring that each participant feels seen, supported, and empowered. As an artist‑educator, I weave pathways that invite imagination, mindfulness, and community connection. Each labyrinth I create is both a ritual and a resource: a space where grief softens, joy awakens, and students and communities discover their shared capacity for healing and growth.

Bio

Athena Dugan is a visionary labyrinth artist, trauma‑informed educator, and community ritual guide based in Philadelphia. As founder of Walkers of the Labyrinth, she creates inclusive pathways for healing, creativity, and connection across schools, retreats, and neighborhoods. Her work is rooted in the belief that labyrinths are more than designs—they are living classrooms, sanctuaries, and mirrors for resilience.
Athena’s journey began with an Associate of Arts in Art & Illustration from the Art Institute of Philadelphia, where she cultivated her love for visual storytelling. Over time, she expanded her practice into labyrinth design and facilitation, blending artistry with emotional safety and accessibility. She is an advanced Certified Labyrinth Facilitator, having collaborated with master builder Lars Howlett on projects such as Roberta’s House, a grief and counseling center, and co‑instructed facilitator summer school and temporary labyrinth building courses. Her installations include annual labyrinths at Clark Park during Pagan Pride Day, as well as walks for women veterans, grief support groups, and intergenerational communities.
Athena is also the creator of Labyrinth Explorers, an after‑school program for children ages 3–8. This initiative introduces young learners to mindfulness, creativity, and connection through playful labyrinth experiences. By engaging children at an early age, Athena fosters resilience, imagination, and emotional awareness, ensuring that the labyrinth becomes a resource for growth across the lifespan.
Her commitment to community engagement extends to her local neighborhood, where she partnered with a community garden to design and build a labyrinth with the help of local school students. This collaborative project reflects her dedication to accessibility, sustainability, and intergenerational learning, while strengthening bonds between schools, families, and community spaces.
Beyond labyrinths, Athena is a Soundbath healer and mindfulness meditation practitioner, serving a private clientele. Through sound and meditation, she offers restorative experiences that complement her labyrinth work, deepening participants’ connection to inner calm, resilience, and creative renewal. These practices expand her holistic approach to healing, blending artistry, ritual, and embodied mindfulness.
Through Walkers of the Labyrinth, Athena partners with schools to integrate labyrinth practice into social‑emotional learning, mindfulness, and creative expression. Her programs empower students to navigate stress, grief, and transitions while fostering empathy, focus, and collaboration. For administrators and educators, she offers tailored presentations, pilot programs, and curriculum support that align with values of accessibility, sustainability, and legacy‑building.
Guided by values of inclusivity, creativity, humility, and sustainability, Athena approaches each labyrinth as a collaborative act of stewardship. She honors the ancient wisdom of the labyrinth while adapting it for contemporary needs, ensuring that every participant—regardless of age, background, or ability—can find belonging within its pathways.
Athena Dugan’s work is luminous, adaptive, and deeply rooted in legacy. Whether guiding a child through their first labyrinth walk, supporting veterans in healing, collaborating with community leaders, or offering sound and meditation practices, she embodies resilience and artistry. Through Walkers of the Labyrinth, she invites all to step into a journey of reflection, empowerment, and connection—one turn at a time.
