“Thank you for developing this course, for making it available virtually and in a format that works with people's schedules. Most teaching artists are gig-workers whose living is patched together by working for several different organizations and municipal agencies. They often miss out on professional development opportunities that are typically only provided to employees of these institutions. Your course--everything about it--is making this possible in a real and impactful way.” –

Our identities, the ones we claim and the ones placed on us, influence the way we travel through the patterns of defining and assigning value in our communities and cultures. The practices and policies of assigning value at varying degrees based on identity can affect the way a person exists in relationship with themselves, others, and the living and nonliving world. During this introductory workshop, participants will be invited to: examine our notions of who/what/how we are, and our notions of who/what/how others are, to explore practices for expanding our perspective, language, and action for ourselves and our learning and creative communities.
This workshop is a prerequisite for our TIP online asynchronous participants to apply for Shavon’s Trauma-Informed Teaching Artist Practice and Identity course to be held live on Zoom in April 2025.
As conversations about identity and inclusivity benefit from a diverse cohort of voices and perspectives, we ask participants to apply for this workshop. While all TIP alumni may apply, priority will be given to graduates of Bartol’s online asynchronous training. Space is limited. You will receive an email by January 10th letting you know if you’ll be offered space in the workshop.
